Material
This product uses 100% New Zealand merino wool fabric.
The main features of merino wool material are "high heat retention", "good breathability", "humidity control", "high deodorant power (antibacterial property)", "heat resistance", and "UV cut".
REDA, which produces the merino wool fabric used by RIDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR, is a long-established wool fabric manufacturer founded in Italy for over 150 years.
Sheep are bred freely on REDA's vast in-house ranch in New Zealand.
The raw wool of the sheep is carefully knitted from raw wool to yarn and from yarn to fabric at our own factory in Italy.
Merino wool is a natural fiber. Even if it is shrink-proofed, some fabric shrinkage will still occur.
This is unavoidable, and I think some of you may have experienced that when you bought a T-shirt or sweatshirt made of natural fiber cotton and washed it, it shrank by more than one size.
As long as it is a natural fiber, there is no choice but to shrink the fabric due to washing, but when making this T-shirt, I wanted to use a material that minimizes the shrinkage as much as possible.
By the time we arrived at this merino wool fabric used for this product, we made a prototype T-shirt with merino wool fabric from three manufacturers.
All of them were made of "washable wool", but when I actually made a sample and repeated wearing and washing, all of them showed a large amount of shrinkage and distortion from one size to more. I ended up not being satisfied with the material.
There are merino wool products mixed with chemical fibers such as nylon and polyester to compensate for the weaknesses of wool products such as shrinkage and low durability. Certainly, there is little shrinkage due to washing, and there are sufficient merits of synthetic fiber blending in terms of daily ease of handling.
However, although I had been wearing a merino wool T-shirt mixed with nylon for a long time, I had the experience that the deterioration of nylon was noticeable and I could not wear it comfortably until the end. I feel that the deodorant and heat-retaining properties are not comparable to 100% merino wool products. Above all, I really like the "atmosphere" of being 100% merino wool. I'm not denying the synthetic merino wool fabric.
In addition to the original high functionality of wool (heat retention, breathability, heat resistance, antibacterial properties, UV protection), this product is a high-performance material that makes full use of REDA's more than 150 years of experience, knowledge and technology, "REDA ACTIVE". using. I made a sample and repeated wearing and washing for about half a year, but it was the most comfortable fabric I have tried so far.
1. Soft texture with less fluff
Merino wool is classified into various grades according to the fineness (fineness) of the yarn that is the basis of the fabric, and the fineness is expressed in μm (micrometer).
This time, the Merino Basic Tee uses a very delicate thread of 17.5 μm (micrometer), which is described as "Super 120's", and is finished in a soft texture with very little "tingling" peculiar to wool.
2. Use New Zealand Merino
The use of New Zealand merino wool is proof that it is "non-mulling wool". "Mulesing" refers to cutting off the skin and meat of the buttocks in a lamb to prevent maggot infestation on the sheep.
The merino breed, which has been bred to collect as much wool as possible, has a large skin area and deep wrinkles on the skin, so it is easy for manure to collect on the wrinkles on the buttocks and pubic area, and it is easy for maggots to breed. In the worst case, maggots can eat the skin and meat and die.
"Mulging" is a way to prevent this, but it may not be anesthetized and the scar may not be treated.
New Zealand has banned such cruel mules from October 2018. Using New Zealand Merino also means using wool raw materials that are suitable for animal welfare.
3. 100% merino wool, yet washable.
Shrink-proof processing is applied over several steps to prevent the fabric from shrinking after washing as much as possible.
Even so, as long as it is a natural fiber, some shrinkage and skewing will inevitably occur. Please refer to the following care methods so that you can use the product for a longer period of time.
・ Please use wool detergent for washing.
・ Put the product inside out and put it in the laundry net, and wash it by itself.
・ The water temperature is limited to 40 ℃, and please avoid washing with boiling water.
・ Avoid strong water currents, and if you wash your hands or use a washing machine, use the "dry course" or "weak water flow course".
・ Never tumble dry.
・ After dehydration, we recommend that you shape it and dry it in the shade.
・ If you do not wear it for a long period of time, keep it clean and store it with an insect repellent.
